Isaiah 40:29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. KJV
There are several Hebrew and Greeks words in the King James Version Bible that are translated as faint. We can summarize them as: to become weary, cease, fall back, forsake, be still, idle, or slothful. The word faint appears over fifty times in New and Old Testament scriptures. Here are a few of those references.
1. God warned Israel to not faint in the midst of battle with their enemies because He was with them and He would fight for them against any enemy no matter how strong.
Deut 20:3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; 4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. KJV
2. If we faint in adversity & trouble it is indicates we are weak and need more strength.
Prov 24:10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. KJV
3. If we do not have enough of the Word of God in us we will become weak and faint.
Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. 13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst. KJV
4. Jonah as many believers became discouraged and wished to die rather than face his test.
Jonah 4:8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. KJV
5. Believers need the constant Presence and Guidance of God by the Holy Spirit in us.
Matt 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. KJV
6. We have a choice to give up (faint) or to seek God in prayer for our needs and problems.
Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; KJV
7. As we sow in life and God’s Kingdom we must guard against giving up too soon. We are promised to reap a harvest if we do not become weary and give up.
Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.KJV
Smelling salts have been in use since Roman times. In the 17th century, an ammonia solution was obtained by distilling shavings of harts' (deer) horns and hooves, which led to the alternative name for smelling salts as spirit or salt of hartshorn. Smelling salts have also been known as 'sal volatile', for their ability to produce a reaction. They were widely used in Victorian Britain to revive fainting women, to the extent that in some areas police constables would carry a specific container of them for the purpose. They are also still used for people feeling faint, or who have fainted, either administered by others, or self administered, with some at risk groups, such as pregnant women, sometimes advised to keep them close to hand. Application
Smelling salts are a temporary manmade solution to the problem of fainting. It does not address the cause of fainting. Fainting is sometimes an indication of a deep seated physical or psychological condition that needs to be addressed. Today we can see many believers who are either in the process of fainting or have already fainted. Some never regain spiritual consciousness and have died spiritually. Others seem to be locked in a life long cycle of waking up and then falling back into a deep slumber over and over again!
Some have fallen asleep and sustained serious spiritual and emotional injuries as a result of fainting. Their lives and relationships have been permanently damaged by circumstances that occurred when they fainted and fell. Others were in significant positions of leadership when they fainted causing great harm to either few or many thousands who looked to them for spiritual leadership. Too many spiritual leaders must spend long hours waking members or trying to find enough “stimulation” in the local services to keep people from fainting or falling asleep in the pews. While the church is sleeping (fainting) the world around them is dying and in need to hearing the Gospel from unselfish fully alert and awake believers.
Conclusion
The Old Testament reference in Isaiah 40 is filled with hope and resolution for the plague of fainting among God’s people. Let’s take a few moments to look at the verses in detail.
1. There is no condemnation. Sometimes those who are alert and awake spiritually forget they once grew tired and weary. They can become judgmental and harsh. This kind of attitude brings about no help, but actually makes matters worse for all who are involved.
2. God is our source of strength. We cannot always depend on others to provide us with help, strength or encouragement. God needs to be our focus and our daily source of strength.
3. There is an indication that as strength or might has waned or declined that the condition can be reversed and restoration is not only possible, but even inevitable if we seek God.
4. None are exempt or unsusceptible from becoming weary or fainting. Young, old, men or women – all are touched with this condition at some point in their Christian life. The verse indicates that some will “utterly fall”. Even in that state there is hope of restoration through the Love of God and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
5. Verse 31 gives a money-back written guarantee to each of us regardless of our situation. “But they that wait upon the LORD (bind together, expect, look to, patiently wait for) shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
6. Full restoration can be expected! Our strength shall be renewed! We shall fly again like an eagle! We shall run again! We shall walk again. We shall NOT be weary and shall NOT FAINT!
7. What are we waiting for? Let’s get up again and go back to God again! Let’s ask, seek and knock until the door is opened to us. If someone around you is fainting or asleep firmly and lovingly stay with them and persist until they are on their feet again, fully conscious and awake. Then, rather than trying to do everything yourself take them to the Father who is their Source and Strength. Too many parents, pastors and leaders try to handle the problems and sins of family, church and friends in their own strength. We must lead them to the Shepherd and Savior.
May God bless you as you wake the faint around you!
